Supporting Staff
Susan Altemus, R.N.
Ms. Altemus attended the Middlemore School of Nursing in
Auckland, New Zealand. Following her graduation, she worked as a
staff nurse at Middlemore Hospital in the burn, orthopedic, and
obstetrical units. She became Charge Nurse for the Emergency Room
and served in that capacity for five years, supervising thirty to
forty nurses. Recruited for an intensive care unit position in the
Texas Medical Center, she immigrated to the United States in the
early 1980s and obtained U.S. residency.
While raising her family, Ms. Altemus has volunteered at the
Medical Center Hospice and Ronald McDonald House, the Meals on
Wheels organization, and the Special Olympics. She organized care
committees to help families in difficulty at her children’s
schools, has participated in school fundraising activities, and has
served as a Girl Scout leader. She is a member of the National
Charity League, the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, the
American Academy of Home Care Physicians, and the Texas Nurses
Association.
She joined the staff of Clearman Associates in the spring of
2002 and brings to the group her organizational skills and ability
to connect immediately with patients; she is able to blend the
comforting atmosphere of home with the running of a doctors’
office. Ms Altemus’ particular medical interests include
sudden death and its impact on families and hospital staff, end of
life care issues and pain control, and patient advocacy.
